Revelation Pharma remembers Dr. Loyd Allen

The Revelation Pharma family would like to express our deep sadness at the passing of Dr. Loyd V. Allen, Jr., on Tuesday, April 23, at the age of 80. Renowned for his pivotal role in the compounding pharmacy sector, Dr. Allen was widely respected as an innovative educator and a guiding light to many in the field. His demise marks a significant loss to the community he dearly nurtured.

While Dr. Allen's career was distinguished by his role as professor emeritus at the University of Oklahoma HSC College of Pharmacy and as the visionary CEO of the Midwest Institute of Research and Technology, he is perhaps most notably known for his role as the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Pharmacy Compounding (IJPC), a beacon of knowledge and excellence in the industry. Under his stewardship, IJPC became the preeminent

Magic potion potential? Let's talk about methylene blue

By Tenille Davis, PharmD, RPh, BCSCP, FACP

What if you were told there was a single drug that had been around for 100 years that acts as a potent antioxidant, improves mitochondrial and cognitive function and mood, and has anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects? You’d hardly believe it because it sounds too good to be true. However, the synthetic dye methylene blue is used for all of these purposes — and more.

Methylene blue is a blue dye and bioactive substance. The first synthetic drug developed in modern history and originally used in the treatment of malaria, it was first approved by the FDA to treat methemoglobinemia, a rare blood disorder that affects how red blood cells deliver oxygen throughout the body. It is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medications. Now, it is better known as a fish tank antiseptic and a dye for blue jeans.

It has been used for many different illnesses and conditions over the

The Atlantic: Menopause, estrogen, and women’s unused options

Women have been dealing with menopause for a couple of hundred thousand years, and yet there’s still a bit of a stigma talking about it, the effects it can have on a woman’s body, and ways to help alleviate some of those negative issues.

Worse, as this article in the Atlantic explains, many gynecologists will try to solve everything with estrogen (or, if they’re British, oestrogen). Since the 1960s it’s been the go-to magic bullet for women in and after menopause.

Reality, though, is more complex — and we’ve learned a lot since the ’60s. Still, though, the lack of a “frank approach to sexuality” for both people born female and those who have transitioned there has kept many from realizing the benefits of other hormones. (Ironically, trans women often get better care when it comes to hormones.)

The point of all this, and of the Atlantic article, is that it’s important for women to think beyond

Ohio state senator tours Lee Silsby Pharmacy, gets the low-down on compounding issues

Ohio State Senator Kent Smith, minority whip and longtime legislator, paid a visit to Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy in late April. Prior to his visit, Smith had a limited background on the world of compounding. Steven Dufala, general manager and pharmacist-in-charge, kicked off the tour with a brief explanation of what compounding is and the patients we serve.

While walking through our state-of-the-art facility, Nancy Fingerhut, director of quality assurance and regulatory affairs, took the time to explain the various measures we have in place to ensure quality and safety. She brought up the significant impact recent regulatory changes have had on the industry, and what we have done as a company to meet those
